There is no specific rule that what kind of longboard will be right for you as it varies from person to person. To give you an idea, this will depend upon several factors including your age, height, weight, your riding goals, and your skillset. Keep all of these aspects in mind while looking for the “right” board for yourself.
In this write-up, the longboarding tips for beginners will be my main focus and till the end, you will have a clear idea of starting it. I am not declining the fact that you will need a lot of practice for becoming better at it.
But starting with the guidance of an expert will make it lessen the chances of any mishap. During this adventure, you make yourself vulnerable to unexpected occurrences so, it is better to follow the right way.

Longboarding tip #1: Find Out Your Stance
For understanding your regularity level, you need to find out first whether you are regular or goofy. There are different practices to check out this like you can access it by skating the football.
For instance, if you use your right foot for skating the football then it means that you are goofy. On the flip side, if you keep your left foot first during skating then it will be an indication that you are regular.
This is the first important step of learning how to longboard for beginners. Put simply, the foot which you keep on the ground first to prevent yourself from stumbling will be your stance.
Longboarding tip #2: Balance in Static Condition
Before initiating the proper practice, you need to be comfortable on the longboard by mastering the balancing skill in a static position. For getting started, pick up a thick carpet or grassy field for avoiding any mishap during practicing balance. In the above-mentioned places, you have to face less friction which will keep you safe from rolling over the board. Standstill on your longboard with your natural stance and your feet should be slightly wider than your shoulder-width.
Keep your front foot angled about 45 degrees along with the deck. However, your back foot should be positioned perpendicular to the deck and you should be fully comfortable while standing like this.
Longboarding tip #3: Articulation of Feet
During initial practice, one of the most crucial factors is the accurate positioning of your feet. This is the major hindrance as most of the people are unable to find out the right placement of their feet on the board.
Speaking of which, you should keep your feet in behind the rear screws regardless of the aspect that you are regular or goofy. Your back foot should be in front of the rear screws and use these to push the board while keeping front feet om the angle of 90 degrees. Most beginners do the mistake of keeping their back foot behind the rear screws which can lead to wobbling. Needless to say that it is a bad practice as it can lift the board because of unequal distribution of your body weight.

Next up is turning your board which is not a hard job and one of the simplest stunts if you do it in the right way. You can use two simple tricks while turning your board during running and these include heel edge curving and toe edge curving. For turning the longboard in the left position, you can dip your toe in an inward position by using the toe edge curving. Likewise, for turning it in the right position, you can use your heel edge covering which will move your heels in a backward position.
Longboarding Tip #5: Get Comfortable Rolling
Now as you know to balance in a static position, articulating your feet and turning the board so, it’s time to start moving. For doing this, move into a slightly inclined parking lot or driveway and let the gravity help you during rolling.

When you will get a little speed then it will become easy to get proper balance and stability. Do not put much pressure, if you are practicing on uneven ground as initially, it could be risky. However, after getting comfortable on this type of ground, it will be convenient for you to get some speed but don’t try to go faster at this point.

The first skill which you need to master for safely running a longboard is foot braking. Although some people hesitate to initiate this practice, it’s not a tough job as you can conveniently stop your board from dropping with the help of your back foot.
Note that, it will be easy to do only at low speed but high speed can make this practice challenging. Never use your toes for stopping the longboard however, you can use the back of your shoes for this purpose.
A simple way to practice foot braking is to squat during rolling while standing on one foot.

Other than that, you need to practice turning and the flat ground will be an ideal option in this regard. You can initiate it by rolling your ankles while pushing the edges with the help of heels & toes for turning the board left or right. After getting comfortable, you can use your whole body for turning instead of using only ankles.
Next up is carving and which refers to the consecutive turns on the longboard while following the S pattern. This will help you to slow down your speed on a slope and you have to bend your knees for this purpose. This will further decrease the center of gravity hence, you will be able to do caving without any hindrance.

Next, try to practice the “tucking and rolling” on a pile of pillows placed on the floor or an exercise mat. There are specific protective gears that you can use to keep yourself safe from injuries and these include knee pads, riding gloves, etc.

However, learning how to slide is a very effective way to slow down your speed during longboarding so worth practicing. If you are going at high speed then it will be safe to use the hand-down slides. While you are not going too fast then you can effectively practice this skill by stand-up sliding.
